Elephant Orphanage

The David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage provides a well-thought through sanctuary to traumatized elephant calves and to a small extent, baby rhinos that have been orphaned through the senseless acts of poachers.

You can count on getting pretty close to these adorably playful creatures, hearing about the specialized treatment they receive 24/7 as well their individual rehabilitation journeys and watching them gulp down quite an amount of specially formulated milk ...

The enthusiastic warders prepare their charges for acclimatization to and eventual reintroduction into the wild where they are often adopted by matriarchs who were often at the orphanage themselves.

The elephant haven is run by Daphne Sheldrick in memory of her husband David who was one of Kenya's world renowned game wardens. It is open for only an hour each day (11.00 am -12.00 pm) so prepare to arrive early. The entry fee is Ksh. 300 though there are opportunities to donate to this undoubtedly worthy cause.
