Kenya Weather is as Invitingly Warm as its People

Although Kenya weather is generally tropical (and I can guarantee that you wont see snow except on Mount Kenya's peaks), there are significant seasonal and geographic variations. Below are Kenya's constituent climates.

Central Highlands

A key component of the Kenya weather is the climate of the central highlands region which lies between 1,220 meters/ 4,000 feet and 2,150 meters/ 7,000 feet and occupies the center the country. It is the most densely populated part of Kenya and the country's bread basket. The climate is largely temperate and the region enjoys a double rainy season that occurs between March and May and November and December with rainfall averaging about 1,250 mm/ 50 inches a year.

The gloomiest and coldest months are June to September where temperatures hover around 8 C (46.4 F) but can be as low as 5 C (41 F) and are thus appropriately referred to as the "winter" months and the evenings may feel rather chilly. December to March are the sunniest months. Nairobi's climate is fairly representative of the region's.

Mounts Kenya and Elgon

The areas surrounding the country's 2 mountains - Kenya and Elgon are generally cold and temperatures often fall low enough for frost to occur. Mount Kenya has a permanent dusting of snow on its jagged peaks.

Coast

The Coast's climate is another vital component of Kenya weather. This leading tourist destination is hot and humid. The average annual rainfall is 1,000 mm/ 40 inches with April and May being the rainiest months while the "short rains" occur in October and November. However, it is generally hot and humid all year although the generous sea breezes temper what would otherwise be punishing heat fairly frequently.

Because coast's sun - this area seems to have an entire solar system to itself! - goes down very grudgingly (even after up to 9 hours of showing off), you can witness some awesome sunsets...

Lake Victoria and the Western Region

The area around Lake Victoria in western Kenya is warm and a tad humid with maximum temperatures being as high as 37C (98.6F) most months. Although the rainy seasons are March to May and November and December, a substantial amount of rainfall falls each month.

North

The weather is severest in the northern and northeastern regions of the country. These are hot and arid with semi-desert-like vegetation. This notwithstanding, these regions are home to several wildlife sanctuaries and the incredible Lake Turkana.

This gorgeous weather is of course complemented with diverse wildlife and landscapes that mark out the country as a tourist's paradise.
