The multinational Avis, Budget and Hertz all have a presence in Mombasa and you can arrange to take possession of your rented car upon arrival at the airport although you may still be required to go to the car hire firm's town office to pay the deposit and sign the contract. Once you get behind the steering wheel, remember to stick to the left side of the road, not to talk on the mobile phone (you will be booked and fined on the spot), to steer well clear of matatus for your own safety and to lock your car when you leave it.
