Mombasa FlightsMombasa flights land at Moi International Airport located about 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the city center and originate from either Nairobi or abroad. There are scheduled Kenya Airways flights to Mombasa from London and Johannesburg. In addition, several companies operate cheaper charter flights out of London and Manchester in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy and France. If Mombasa is your port of entry into Kenya, there is a visa charge of US$ 50 for nationals of the UK, USA, all EU countries, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. The visa is issued on the spot and the accompanying immigration formalities are straightforward.
Flights from Nairobi to Mombasa are operated by Fly 540, Air Kenya and Kenya Airways and cost US$ 99-125 (excluding taxes) for a return flight. Whichever flight you are using however, please remember to carry your valuables such as your money, camera and laptop in your hand luggage as thefts are not unheard of - you don't want to ruin your safari even before it starts! There is no airline shuttle from the airport into town nor is there any public bus and the communal taxi (matatu) stop is a good kilometer away from the airport. Most of the beach hotels provide courtesy shuttles to and from their hotels but be sure to inquire about this before you start your safari. Do have the hotel's telephone number handy – it is cheaper to call to inquire about a pick up than to pay for a taxi:-) You can also pick up your rented car from the airport. Should you need to hire a taxi, for your security and safety, it is highly recommended that you do so from accredited firms such as KENATCO and Sacco Airport Taxis which have prominent booths at the airport. Taxi fares range from about Ksh 1300 to Nyali, Ksh 3200 to Tiwi and Ksh 3700 to Diani beaches.
